LURC endorses Plum Creek project

After 17 hours of deliberation this week, state regulators yesterday endorsed Plum Creek Timber Co.'s proposed development for the Moosehead Lake area, paving the way for the largest development in Maine's history.

The Land Use Regulation Commission did not request any major changes to the Seattle-based company's controversial proposal to build nearly 1,000 house lots and two resorts on 16,000 acres around Moosehead Lake, according to the Bangor Daily News. Plum Creek as part of the plan would also conserve roughly 400,000 acres in the area.

The commission next week expects to vote on the development and formally present the developer with a list of minor changes, which Plum Creek must accept to move forward. If Plum Creek accepts the recommendations, the company and LURC staff will write a final plan to be presented to the commission early next year.

The development has been hotly contested during LURC's three-and-a-half-year review of the project by those concerned the development would harm the environment and damage the rural character of the Moosehead Lake area. Opponents are expected to appeal LURC's decision to Maine's Superior Court, according to the Bangor Daily News.
