Macy's trims staff

Department store giant Macy's is cutting 7,000 positions nationwide, about a dozen of which are expected to occur in Maine.

A spokeswoman for the Cincinnati-based chain said based on percentages, the Macy's stores in Bangor and South Portland would likely lose five or six positions each, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company also identified 11 stores it will close in 2009, primarily in Florida, the Midwest and on the West Coast. Declining sales due to the recession were blamed for the cutbacks.
