Maine 2024 | Looking back, looking ahead

It was a time of high expectations. In 1994, Angus King, a newly minted Independent, was elected to what would become eight years as Maine’s chief executive. Sen. George Mitchell was leaving the U.S. Senate — perhaps to become a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, perhaps to whip those balky, striking Major League Baseball players into shape. (Not our beloved Sea Dogs, of course, who moved to Portland that summer.)

Fleet Bank was Maine’s largest, with $3.4 billion in assets. The Maine Mall was undergoing a $6.5 million renovation that brought in Lechmere. Hootie and the Blowfish topped the radio charts before iPods were a glimmer in Apple’s eye, and “Philadelphia” made moviegoers think twice about homosexuality long before Maine ever signed a law endorsing gay marriage.

And toiling away at a kitchen table in Portland was a lone entrepreneur, certain that Maine was ready for — nay, needed — a statewide business publication.

Has it really been 15 years? Yep, and Mainebiz has been chronicling and questioning the events that have shaped our business landscape the entire time. Join us as we reflect on the trends and events of the last 15 years of business in Maine, and consider what might lie ahead.
