Portland-based accounting firm BerryDunn recently opened an office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and signaled that it is open to further expansion.
The move comes three years after the firm began serving clients in Puerto Rico via a local team that has grown to 10 staff members. They are supported by 30 to 40 colleagues based in other offices.
"As our Puerto Rico work grows, we continue to hire local team members to support our local clients and build local expertise," BerryDunn CEO Sarah Belliveau told Mainebiz. She noted that while BerryDunn's Medicaid and state government practices are currently active in Puerto Rico, the firm "has been assessing several opportunities within health systems and local governments."
Bill Richardson, a principal in BerryDunn's Medicaid practice group, heads the firm's Puerto Rico office, whose clients include agencies providing strategic planning, project management, grant management and compliance.
Asked whether there are any tax advantages to individuals based in Puerto Rico or other American territories, Belliveau said, "Our decision to open an office in Puerto Rico was based primarily on what was best for our clients and our team. And while we are not performing tax services in Puerto Rico, we see growing interest in audit and tax work wherever we go."
BerryDunn employs more than 800 people in nine offices, including the new one in Puerto Rico's capital and largest city.
Belliveau left the door open for further expansion.
"As a national firm, BerryDunn's vision supports adding offices when they support our employees, help them feel part of BerryDunn, provide for collaboration or support our clients," she said. "We are looking forward to additional future offices that will help us live this vision."
BerryDunn is one of Maine’s largest accounting firms. The newest data and rankings will be published in late December in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
