Maine sellers of recreational-use marijuana grossed $1.4 million in their first month of retail sales since the market launched on Oct. 9, according to preliminary data released Monday by the state's Office of Marijuana Policy.

Close to 22,000 transactions were recorded during the month.

The data, which comes from the state’s inventory tracking system, shows that smokable marijuana made up more than three-quarters (76%) of sales, while concentrates accounted for 14% and infused products accounted for 10%.

An active license is required for businesses to legally possess, process and sell marijuana for recreational use by adults, including initiating plant transfers from Maine’s existing medical marijuana program.

While there were sales from six active licensees in the month of October, an additional three adult-use retailers opened their doors in November, regulators said.

It noted that the initial reporting period covers sales over a 31-day period, and that preliminary figures are subject to revision and have not yet been audited.

“While it is easy to focus solely on the numbers, it is important to note that the Office of Marijuana Policy’s primary objective is maintaining the high standard of public health and safety we have set for the adult-use program,” Erik Gundersen, director of the Office of Marijuana Policy, said in a news release.

He added, “We appreciate the commitment our licensees have demonstrated to enact COVID protocols to ensure a safe launch and their continued commitment to these efforts in light of the recent spike in COVID cases in Maine.”

Gov. Janet Mills' administration created the Office of Marijuana Policy within Maine's Department of Administrative and Financial Services in February 2019.

It is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of legalized marijuana, including Maine's existing Medical Use of Marijuana Program.

If they were worried about health they would not be selling this dangerous product. They are worried about taxing the poor. Much like the lottery.
