Bangor and Portland airports are faring better than their bigger brethren, prompting officials in Portland to move forward with a $60 million expansion.
Passenger traffic that had been declining since September at the Portland International Jetport rebounded in July, setting a new record for that month with 202,311 passengers flying into and out of the airport, up about 2.5% from July 2008 and 23% from June this year, according to the Portland Press Herald. Jetport manager Paul Bradbury told the newspaper that he expects similarly robust numbers will be reported for August. Bangor International Airport has seen passenger traffic increase month by month for most of this year, thanks in part to a new discount carrier.
Nationally, passenger traffic dropped 9.5% in the first five months of 2009, according to the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics, reported the Press Herald. Boston's Logan Airport saw a 9% decline and Manchester's airport took a nosedive of 19.2 % for January to May of this year compared with the same period last year.
Work on a 160,000-square-foot, four-story addition at the Portland Jetport is scheduled to begin next spring and be completed in about 18 months, according to the paper.
