Maine among 26 to get fed-run insurance exchange

Maine is among a group of 26 states where the federal government will operate online health insurance marketplaces, known as exchanges, according to the latest tally.

Reuters reported that another 24 states, including the District of Columbia, plan to run their own marketplaces or partner with the federal government in setting up the websites allowing customers to browse and compare available health insurance plans.

The latest tally comes after a Feb. 15 reporting deadline for states to tell the federal government whether they plan to set up their own exchanges. Those exchanges are to be implemented by Oct. 1 of this year.

Gov. Paul LePage said in November that Maine would not participate in implementing the new exchange that is required by the Obama administration's Affordable Care Act. States not running their own exchanges may do so in years to come, however.

A November poll of Mainebiz readers, with 43 respondents, had 74.4% stating that the state should set up its own exchange.
