Five Maine arts organizations will receive a total of $900,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts, the independent federal agency said Monday.
The grants are part of $84 million in new grants issued to 1,144 organizations in every U.S. state. The Maine Arts Commission, which funds a variety of arts-related organizations throughout the state, will receive the bulk of the money, $795,000.
Other recipients are: Camden International Film Festival, $25,000; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, in Deer Isle, $15,000; Portland Ovations, $50,000; and the Telling Room, in Portland, $15,000.
In May, the Maine Arts Commission reviewed 235 applications requesting just over $1 million. Compared to the 2019 funding cycle, the commission is receiving a $38,000 increase from the NEA.
“Given the fact so many people in Maine’s arts and culture sector are facing a financial crisis, I hope to distribute our funding early in the new fiscal year,” said Julie Richard, executive director of the Maine Arts Commission, in a news release.
NEA Chairwoman Mary Anne Carter said, “These awards demonstrate the continued creativity and excellence of arts projects across America and the nimbleness of our nation’s arts organizations in the face of a national crisis that shuttered their doors for months.”
