A year after going to Iceland to market the state’s craft brewers, the Maine Brewers’ Guild said it will send a Maine Beer Box to England in September.
“Carrying forward an international, collaborative project launched last year, brewers from across the state will fill the Maine Beer Box with fresh craft beer and send it aboard a freighter ship to Leeds, England, where Maine breweries will be featured at the 7th annual Leeds International Beer Festival in September,” according to a Maine Brewers’ Guild announcement on its website.
The Maine Beer Box is a 40-foot refrigerated shipping container with 78 beer taps and a self-contained draft system. It was commissioned in 2017 by the Maine Brewers’ Guild.
“Serving as a symbol of the collaborative spirit of the Maine and American craft brewing industry — the Maine Beer Box is utilized as part of a multi-year project based around a global exchange of beer between brewers from Maine and countries around the world,” said the trade association, which represents the state’s craft brewers.
Maine is home to 117 breweries.
According to the Brewers Association, a Boulder, Colo.-based trade group, Maine craft breweries have an economic impact of $476 million, ranking No. 32 nationwide. The brewers produce 319,590 barrels of craft beer a year, No. 19 in the nation, which equates to 9.6 gallons per adult 21 or older, No. 7.
