The Maine Brewers' Guild has hired its first executive director, a move the organization says comes in response to a growing number of small breweries in the state.
Sean Sullivan, formerly the president of Portland Greendrinks, told Mainebiz the number of breweries is expected to grow by a third by the end of this year, from 30 at the start of 2013 to 40 by the end of the year.
According to an industry blog written by James Sanborn, an insurance agent who specializes in serving breweries, the number of new Maine breweries set to open by the end of this year could be 18.
Daniel Kleban, president of the guild's board of directors, said in a prepared statement that hiring an executive director will help the organization grow and support brewers he said are "quickly making Maine a hub for craft beer in the U.S."
In coming on as executive director, Sullivan said he expects the organization to become more active in legislative issues in Augusta.
He also said the board of the guild, which meets tonight, is considering conducting a statewide economic impact study that could be done before the end of next year.
