Executives from the Maine Celtics basketball team, Shaw Brothers Construction and Springer's Jewelers were among those inducted this week into Junior Achievement’s Maine Business Hall of Fame.
The 2022 inductees were Dan and Jon Shaw, owners of Shaw Brothers Construction; Dajuan Eubanks, president of the Maine Celtics; and Springer's family members Lilly Mullen, Zoe Beaulieu Garcia, Eddie Beaulieu and Rick Beaulieu, third- and fourth-generation owners of the iconic Maine jewelry stores.
The event, held Nov. 7 at Holiday Inn By the Bay, also showcased students from Gorham, Buxton and South Portland, who shared their Junior Achievement experiences and thoughts on their mentors with over 350 businesspeople in attendance.
Wendy Frey, a freshman at South Portland High School, said Junior Achievement’s Economics for Success program "taught me about saving money, the real prices, and expenses of insurance, and how important it is to us … . Since their lessons, I’ve been a lot better at saving money and making informed decisions about my future.”
JA alumni Troy Johnson, who now volunteers to mentor youth, shared his personal story as a JA student who sees the value in training Maine’s future workforce early.
“The greatest misnomer in the English language is “self-made man” (or woman). I know that it takes a village, or more," Johnson said. "None of us does 'it' on his or her own … . We who have opportunities need to use them to create and to build opportunities for others.”
Since 1990, Junior Achievement’s Maine Business Hall of Fame has recognized people for their leadership and success in business and community involvement.
Junior Achievement of Maine empowers youth with the knowledge, ability and confidence to navigate their futures, and provides real-world training in financial literacy. JA delivered 20-plus programs to over 10,300 students in classrooms throughout Maine last year. For more visit JAmaine.org.
