Maine's consumer confidence is lower than it was last year, according to a survey from a Portland firm.
Maine's index of consumer sentiment for the state is 58.3, down from 62.0 in October and well below a historic high of 104.4 in April 2000, according to a survey from Market Decisions. Mainers' consumer sentiment for the country, however, rose slightly from 64.9 in October to 65.6. The survey also found that 45% of Mainers say they are worse off than they were a year ago, and only 22% expect to be better off in the next year. Sixty-one percent of those surveyed said they expected Maine to experience bad financial times in the next 12 months, while 44% believed the same for the country. Market Decisions surveyed 401 Maine residents between Jan. 20 and Feb. 4.
Meanwhile, the U.S. consumer confidence index fell almost 11 points in February to 46, the lowest in 10 months, according to the Associated Press.
