Maine credit unions soar in 2014 membership
Membership at Maine’s 61 credit unions surged to 646,429 statewide, reflecting an additional 10,000 new members from Dec. 31 of last year through this June 30, which is a new record, a Maine Credit Union League report said.
“This is a trend that is being seen throughout the country, with the recent passing of 100 million memberships in credit unions nationwide,” John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League, said in a statement.
As of June 30, the combined assets at Maine’s credit unions exceeded $6.3 billion, an increase of $182 million over year-end figures. Loan growth, which is an indicator of consumer spending, increased by more than $100 million to $4.2 billion in outstanding loans.
