Maine declines joining zero-emission vehicle effort

Maine officials have declined signing on to a multi-state effort to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles in use.

State officials told the The Associated Press that Maine does not have the adequate infrastructure to support the effort, but environmental groups and others said not joining the other states is a mistake. All other New England states except for New Hampshire have signed the pledge to get at least 15% of new cars sold to be zero-emission by 2025.

According to a U.S. Department of Energy database, the AP reported Maine has only 14 public charging stations for electric vehicles, which is fewer than nearby Vermont and New Hampshire, which have 20 and 16 public stations, respectively.
