Uncle Andy’s Diner in South Portland will get star treatment later this year when the Food Network features it on the popular reality TV series “Restaurant Impossible.”
Host Robert Irvine and his crew will take the 60-year-old diner through a 36-hour, $10,000 makeover marathon on June 9 ahead of its June 11 grand reopening, The Forecaster reported. The episode will air later this year.
Owner Dennis Fogg told the newspaper he and his wife Tina learned of the diner’s selection last week after an application was sent by his four adult children two months ago. A spokesman for Food Network would neither confirm nor deny the taping.
Fogg said while he still has a regular group of customers, his business was hurt by the city’s three-year infrastructure project in Knightville, where the diner is located. It almost got to the point where Fogg and his wife considered selling the business.
"It's gorgeous now [outside), it paid off, but we had to live through three years of dust, noise, construction and no parking," he told The Forecaster. "Over the years, things have changed, and we thought ["Restaurant: Impossible"] would be a great way to revitalize."
