Maine farm revenue up 9% in 2006

Maine farmers earned $593 million in sales in 2006, earning more than any other New England state for the first time since 2003, the state Department of Agriculture said yesterday.

The figure is a nine percent increase over sales in 2005. The biggest sellers were potatoes, bringing in $130 million in sales, and livestock and poultry, bringing $126 million. Milk ($84 million), wild blueberries ($60 million) and eggs ($51 million) rounded out the top five sellers.

New England farmers as a whole earned $2.28 billion in 2006.
