Maine Fence lays off 11

Maine Fence Company in Pittsfield has laid off 11 of its 17 employees and says more cuts may be coming.

Business at the 47-year-old wooden fence company, which had more than 100 employees a decade ago, has dwindled recently due to a sluggish economy, rising insurance and workers' compensation costs, competition from Canadian mills and the popularity of plastic fences, Barry Bishop, the company's president, told the Central Maine Morning Sentinel. The remaining six-person staff could be cut further, to just three people, he said. "We're still trying to hang on, but I'm afraid we're probably doomed," he told the paper.

Bishop told the paper he is exploring ways to increase business and hopes to rehire at least some of the laid-off employees.
