Maine fishing in 2014 sets new record

Maine fishermen set a new state record for 2014, reeling in a catch valued at more than $585 million, but not every fishery had good news.

The Associated Press reported that the catch value of combined fisheries increased $44 million from 2013. A majority of the catch value came from the more than $456 million in lobsters caught last year, an $86 million increase that was driven by a spike in the average statewide price for lobster.

The catch value for elvers, which are baby eels, dropped by $24.6 million to $8.4 million, the result of slashed elver quotas and an approximately $1,000 decrease in per-pound value, according to the Portland Press Herald. The catch value for scallops, however, increased by $1.8 million to $7.5 million, the newspaper said.
