Maine joins AIG investigation

Maine has joined 18 other states in an investigation into the bonuses paid to executives at American International Group.

Led by New Jersey, the group of states has sent a letter to Edward Liddy, AIG's CEO, demanding a list of employees in the AIG Financial Products unit who received bonuses since September and whether they were paid with federal money, according to Bloomberg News. Calls to the Maine Attorney General's office were not returned by press time.

Last week, AIG created a public outcry when it paid $165 million in employee bonuses after receiving $173 billion in federal bailout funds. In response, the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed a law that would tax 90% of employee bonuses paid at firms that received at least $5 billion in federal bailout funds.
