Maine labs to get faster Internet

The University of Maine System signed two agreements this week that will extend high-speed Internet access to the Orono campus and research labs in the state.

UMS signed the first agreement with Mid-Maine Communications, saying it would lease a fiber-optic cable from the company that runs from Portland to Bangor. UMS appropriated $3 million in state funding earlier this year to lease an existing fiber-optic cable between the two cities and lay a new cable from Bangor to the Orono campus, according to a press release.

The second agreement with The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor will allow the lab and seven other research institutions like the MDI Biological Laboratory to build a fiber-optic cable to connect to the high-speed Internet access in Orono. The Maine IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, which includes Jackson Lab, received nearly $300,000 in federal funding this week to help its eight member institutions connect with the high-speed line in Orono.

The agreement includes a second phase that would connect the high-speed line from Portland to Boston, where it will hook up with Internet2, an existing high-speed network exclusively for scientific research institutions.
