Maine Military Authority lays off 35
Approximately half of the workforce of the Maine Military Authority will be affected by 35 layoffs that were announced and effective on Wednesday, according to the organization’s executive director Hugh Corbet.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the laid off employees were refurbishing Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses.
As Mainebiz reported in September, Gov. Paul LePage halted the contract executed by the military authority following the discovery that the $19 million agreement to refurbish the MBTA busses was underbid, leading to the possibility of added taxpayer costs stemming from cost-overruns.
“Despite constructive and positive discussions to resolve budget shortfalls for the Dual Mode Articulated Bus Midlife Overhaul Program, MMA and MBTA representatives have not reached an agreement,” read a statement from MMA, according to the BDN. “Discussions remain ongoing and we are hopeful that a solution will be reached and employees can return to work.”
Corbet told the BDN that the rest of the military authority’s employees will continue to work on other projects, including the refurbishment of school busses.
