Maine OKs extended unemployment benefits

The Legislature yesterday approved an emergency bill to extend unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office.

Baldacci signed the bill yesterday, which made technical changes to Maine unemployment law that allow the state to tap into federal stimulus funds, according to the release. The governor's office estimates that, by the end of this year, 10,000 laid-off workers in Maine will ultimately be eligible for extending benefits beyond 59 weeks. Currently, as many as 263 workers are eligible.

Maine's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March was 8.1%, according to the Maine Department of Labor.
