Maine population up 4% since 2000

The state's population grew 4.2% over the last decade, about half the national rate, according to 2010 Census figures released yesterday.

Maine gained 53,438 people over the last 10 years, putting the total population at 1,328,361 and besting the previous decade's rate of 3.8%, the Portland Press Herald reported. Maine ranks 41st in the nation by population size, falling one spot from 2000. In New England, Rhode Island had the slowest growth rate of 0.4%, while New Hampshire had the fastest rate of 6.5%. Nationally, the population grew 9.7% to more than 308 million people, the slowest rate since the Great Depression.

Only one state -- Michigan -- saw a drop in population over the past decade. Nevada was the fastest-growing state with a rate of 35.1%. More 2010 Census data will be released in February and March, according to the paper.
