U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe have requested about $7 billion in federal funds for defense projects that would benefit Maine businesses.
The largest requests would benefit the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pratt & Whitney, the Connecticut-based aircraft engine manufacturer that employs 1,300 people at its North Berwick facility, according to the requests, which were posted on Sen. Susan Collins' website last week. The senators have requested 15 more C-17 Globemaster III military transport planes at a cost of $3.6 billion and 16 F-22 Raptor fighter jets at a cost of $2.8 billion. Portions of the work on those planes would be completed at Pratt & Whitney's North Berwick facility.
The senators are requesting funds for more than 45 projects, most of which focus on research and development. Other Maine businesses and institutions that could benefit from the earmarks include Washburn & Doughty in East Boothbay, Howe and Howe Technologies in North Berwick, Applied Thermal Sciences in Sanford and the University of Maine in Orono. The earmark requests will be reviewed by congressional appropriations committees and need approval in the House and Senate before moving forward. See all the proposed Maine earmarks here.
