Maine shrimp season faces second cancellation

Maine shrimp harvesting may be canceled for a second consecutive season after a draft report by marine scientists said the shrimp population continues to face unfavorable conditions because of warming ocean temperatures.

A technical committee that advises the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission said in the report that “the depleted condition of the [shrimp] resource and poor prospects for the near future” justify the closure, according to The Associated Press.

Ben Martens, executive director of the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association, told the news agency that the closure would “be another blow to Maine fishermen.”

The Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission closed the Northern Shrimp Section, which includes the Gulf of Maine, to harvesting for the first time in more than 30 years earlier this year. The panel is set to vote on Nov. 5 about whether to continue the closure.
