Maine syrup production down

Maine was the only state this year to record a decline in the production of syrup, posting 215,000 gallons, down 4% from 2007. Meanwhile, the nation's output of maple syrup rose 30% to 1.64 million gallons.

Producers in northern Maine said they were hindered by deep snows and warm temperatures, while southern Maine reported perfect conditions and healthy sap flows, the Associated Press reported. Vermont produced more syrup than any other state, with 500,000 gallons.

The value of the 2008 syrup production has not yet been determined. In 2007, Maine made $6.8 million and the nation as a whole made $41.7 million. Prices were expected to increase this year because of depleted syrup inventories in the United States and Canada.
