Maine tops ‘naughty list’ of holiday shoppers
Mainers seem to say “bah, humbug” when it comes to buying treats for Santa Claus.
The state ranks lowest nationally in an analysis of residents’ purchases of cookies, milk and carrots during the week before Christmas, according to a news release Wednesday from Ibotta, a Colorado developer of mobile shopping apps.
Based on 5.1 million item-level receipts from the past three years, the company’s first “Naughty List” named Maine as the state where residents appear to spend the least on snacks for Santa and his eight tiny reindeer.
Wisconsin, Mississippi and North Dakota followed on the list.
Utah residents topped the “Nice List” by purchasing more cookies, milk and carrots than consumers in any other state. Oregon, with the most carrots purchased, was the top destination for the reindeer.
Details of the analysis were unavailable, so it’s not clear if the rankings were made on a per capita basis, or by how much Maine lagged other states in stocking up for the Christmas Eve visitors.
The news release also didn’t indicate whether Maine consumers prefer to offer home-made treats. Three other New England states — Rhode Island, followed by Connecticut and Massachusetts — topped the Nice List in purchases of flour, chocolate chips and other cookie-baking supplies.
