Maine’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.7% in the latest estimate, down from 6.9% in September and 7.2% one year ago.
The Maine Department of Labor reported an estimated 47,300 job seekers were unable to find work in October, down 3,800 since the beginning of the year.
Nationally, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.3% in October, up from 7.2% in September and down from 7.9% one year ago.
Maine also had a lower unemployment rate than the region. New England states had an average unemployment rate of 7.1%. Maine’s rate was higher than New Hampshire (5.1%), Vermont (4.5%) and lower than Massachusetts (7.2%), Rhode Island (9.2%) and Connecticut (7.9%).
Through October, for the 73rd consecutive month, Maine had a higher percentage of its total population employed, 61%, than the national employment to population rate of 58.3%.
