Maine unemployment rate increases slightly

Maine’s unemployment rate in August was 5.6%, a slight increase from 5.5% in July but 1% less than it was in August 2013.

The Maine Department of Labor reported an estimated 39,800 Mainers were unemployed last month, down 9,713 from the beginning of the year.

The national unemployment rate in August was 6.1%, a slight decrease from 6.2% in July and a larger decrease from 7.2% one year ago.

Maine’s unemployment rate remained under the average of 5.9% for New England states. The state’s rate was lower than Massachusetts (5.8%), Rhode Island (7.7%) and Connecticut (6.6%) and higher than New Hampshire (4.4%) and Vermont (4.1%).

Maine’s employment to population ratio was 61.1% in October, remaining higher than the national average of 59% for the 83rd consecutive month.
