Maine unemployment rate rises to 3.3% in September

Maine's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.3% in September from 3.1% in August, according to data released Friday by the Maine Department of Labor.

Total non-farm wage and salary jobs increased by 1,600 in September to 638,900, following an upward revision of 1,100 jobs for the August estimate.

The largest job increase in the month was registered in the leisure and hospitality sector.

In the three months through September, the number of jobs overall increased an average of 700 per month over the previous three months through June. The three-month average was the same as the average for 2019, before the pandemic.

Private sector jobs inched up by 0.2%, while government jobs were 1.1% lower, mostly in public higher education.

Among Maine's three metropolitan areas, unemployment was below the statewide average in Portland-South Portland at 2.8%, and close to the average in Bangor (3.1%) and Lewiston-Auburn (3.3%).

Across Maine, unemployment ranged from a low of 2.7% in Sagahadoc County to a high of 4.6% in Somerset County.

The Maine Department of Labor is scheduled to release October statistics on Friday, Nov. 18.
