Maine unemployment rises slightly in September

Maine's unemployment rate in September was 5.8%, an increase from 5.6% in August but nearly 1% less than it was a year ago.

The Maine Department of Labor reported an estimated 40,700 were unemployed last month, 6,000 fewer than a year ago.

The national unemployment rate in September was 5.9%, a slight decrease from 6.1% in August and a larger decrease from 7.2% one year ago.

Maine's unemployment rate remained just under the average of 6% for the New England states. The state was lower than Massachusetts (6%), Rhode Island (7.6%) and Connecticut (6.4%) and higher than New Hampshire (4.3%) and Vermont (4.4%).

Maine's employment-to-population ratio was 60.9% in September, remaining higher than the national average of 59% for the 84th consecutive month.

The unemployment rates are seasonally adjusted.
