Mainebiz won two Editorial Excellence Awards from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers at the industry group’s annual summer conference last week in Atlanta.
The magazine received a Silver Prize among medium-size publications for “best local coverage of a national business/economic story” and a bronze in the medium-size category for “best overall tabloid design.”
The Mainebiz editorial team picked up the silver for its ongoing coverage of the state’s workforce development needs.
“The stories reflect a deep knowledge of the state, give great context, and raise important questions,” noted the competition’s 24 judges, who are faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
In awarding the bronze to Mainebiz Art Director Matt Selva, the judges wrote, “This is a well-organized publication that makes effective use of color-coded sections, clean aesthetic style, and carefully considered use of whitespace. It all adds up to an easy-to-navigate and pleasing reader experience.”
Mainebiz is owned by Worcester, Mass.-based New England Business Media, which also publishes the Worcester Business Journal and, in Connecticut, the Hartford Business Journal and New Haven Biz.
Last year, Mainebiz received AABP awards in the small-publication category for feature layout and for a special issue, "Fact Book: Doing Business in Maine."
The 2019 competition drew 511 entries from 41 regional publications in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Other winners this year included Mainebiz sister publications, the Hartford Business Journal and the Worcester Business Journal.
