Mainebiz redesigns print edition

The new look of the Mainebiz print edition has arrived. Yep, just when all that blather about the imminent death of print reaches its peak, we come along and invest in our print publication. Nicer paper, color photos throughout, a new color palette and a punchier design that forbids you to put down Mainebiz before you've read every word.

But we haven't messed with the content you depend upon. Based on two years of reader roundtables, we know better than to ditch the list, In Short or Business Maine, although we have freshened up their presentations. We also will continue to deliver the stories that reflect trends, events and analysis of Maine's business community, such as our cover story on Integrated Project Delivery, a new method of building complicated projects that Staff Writer Matt Dodge explores in "Special delivery," part of our focus on real estate, construction and design. IPD made its Maine debut with the $312 million MaineGeneral hospital under construction now, and is expected to bring the project to completion ahead of schedule and under budget.

Also part of this focus section, a chat with Consigli Construction and KBS Building Systems executives about a new partnership involving a student housing project at Trinity College. Senior Writer Jim McCarthy shows how an emerging interest in arranging financing for prospective clients has helped Consigli weather construction doldrums, in "Creative solutions," starting on page 19.

We also check out Maine Real Estate and Development Association's annual forecasting conference. See where there's movement in Maine markets on page 22, and then click over to mainebiz.biz/mereda2013 to watch videos of conference attendees talk about changes needed to increase business for their companies this year.

And Pika Energy is making waves with its solar and wind technology that has drawn more than $1 million in investment. Contributing Writer Lori Valigra's story about the pilot project starts on the cover.

Speaking of making waves, Mainebiz Publisher Donna Brassard is in Arizona at a business journal conference, and couldn't bear to miss the launch of the new Mainebiz. So she sent these thoughts:

"When I was a little girl, my grandparents bought the first color television set in our family. When I watched "The Wizard of Oz" for the first time on that set, I was thrilled and amazed when Dorothy walked through that door from her black-and-white world in Kansas into brilliantly colored Oz. The yellow brick road was really yellow! From then on I experienced movies, sports and the news on television in full color.

Today, I'm not claiming that Mainebiz is going to transport you to the magical world of Oz, but we are going to bring you the news, information and insight you rely on in full color. We listened to you, constant reader, and took your advice to give our award-winning publication a few tweaks to make it more user-friendly and modern.

Reader feedback made this happen, and reader feedback will help us continue to deliver the best Mainebiz has to offer. So bring on the feedback — tell us what you like, don't like, wish we had. We'll continue to take on the challenge to surprise and delight you with our coverage of Maine's business community. We thank you most sincerely."

And since Donna brought up thanks, let me give a big shout-out to our ace design team of Jan Holder and Matt Selva who created this impressive version of Mainebiz. Like I said at the beginning: Wow, right?
