For breaking news coverage of the Lewiston shootings last October, Mainebiz has received a top prize from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers. In addition, Art Director Matt Selva received two awards for design.
AABP represents dozens of business publications in North America, which together have a circulation of over 1.2 million. The group holds an annual Editorial and Design Excellence Competition.
This year, more than 600 entries were submitted by 47 publications. Entries are judged by faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and winners were announced Friday evening in Baton Rouge, La., at AABP's annual summer conference.
For Best Coverage of Local Breaking News, Mainebiz took home the gold prize in the medium-size publication category, recognizing three stories reported in the early morning of Oct. 26, 2023, as the manhunt for the killer of 18 Mainers was in its initial stages. The coverage was updated over the next 24 hours.
The award is a shared honor for Mainebiz editorial staff members William Hall, Renee Cordes and Alexis Wells.
“When a deadly mass shooting happened overnight in Lewiston, Maine, everything felt uncertain for residents while the suspect remained at large for several hours,” the contest judges noted in their written comments.
“This reporting provided readers with a small respite in the form of confirmed facts and information. While the manhunt was underway, the reporters kept readers informed of what businesses stayed open and which closed across the state.”
For Best Overall Design — Medium Tabloids, Selva won a silver award for 2023 editions published Jan. 3 ("Stirring the pot"); May 1 ("Selling Maine as a convention destination"); May 29 ("Forces of nature"); and Dec. 11 ("Safe passage").
“Covers and features are graced with conceptual and impactful visuals, such as ‘Selling Maine as a convention destination’ and ‘Forces of nature,’” the judges remarked.
“The use of large, bold typography delivers a sense of visual hierarchy, and the variety of bright colors, graphic elements and textures helps to make each page attractive and engaging. There is a consistent and unique look through the book.”
For Best Front Page — Newspaper, Selva won a bronze award for his “Lewiston levels up” cover published Feb. 26, 2023, for a feature by Mainebiz Senior Writer Laurie Schreiber.
The cover includes a photograph by Tim Greenway, a regular Mainebiz contributor.
“Daring typography placed into the image brings the downtown streetscape to life,” the judges commented. "The buildings appear to have been photographed at the right time of day to capture the best light. The bold visual approach feels fresh and stylish.”
Mainebiz’s two sister publications — the Worcester (Mass.) Business Journal and Hartford (Conn.) Business Journal — also received prizes. All three publications are owned by New England Business Media, which is led by CEO Peter Stanton and President Tom Curtin.
"The awards are indicative of the hard work we see every day from the editorial and production teams," said Mainebiz Editor Peter Van Allen. "It's a lean team and I'm grateful for all the work they put in."
Congratulations! Woo Hoo!!
