MaineGeneral hospital plan gets $35M

MaineGeneral Health's plan for a new hospital in Augusta has received a $35 million boost from the Harold Alfond Foundation.

The $25 million core support payment and $10 million matching challenge is the largest award in the health care organization's history, according to a press release from MaineGeneral. The money will go toward the construction of a proposed hospital at MaineGeneral's 160-acre North Augusta campus, already the home of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, as well as the renovations to MaineGeneral's Thayer Campus in Waterville.

MaineGeneral in October first proposed a $322 million consolidated hospital in Augusta to replace aging facilities in the city and Waterville by 2015. The project still needs approval from the state for its certificate of need, which MaineGeneral filed in December.
