MaineHousing carbon credit plan advances

MaineHousing's plan to sell carbon credits to fund weatherization efforts this week received approval from an independent accreditor, moving it a step closer to being the first such program in the world.

The program would allow the housing agency to sell carbon credits from greenhouse gas emissions reductions generated through its weatherization projects, according to reports from the Maine Public Broadcasting Network and the Bangor Daily News. Independent validator First Environment in New York signed off on the program after five months of review, a move that will allow MaineHousing to quantify the amount of carbon dioxide reduced and determine the number of credits created through weatherization efforts, according to MPBN. MaineHousing Director Dale McCormick said the program is the first of its kind in the world to move so far toward linking home weatherization to carbon credits.

The program must receive independent approval from a second accreditor before MaineHousing can sell the credits and use the revenue to fund additional weatherization efforts, according to the paper. McCormick said MaineHousing and Efficiency Maine Trust programs could sell a total of 8,000 carbon credits a year, but did not say how much revenue that would be, since the price fluctuates. Generally, one credit equals one ton of carbon dioxide.
