Mainers picket Walmart over working conditions

Labor groups and others in Maine joined a national Black Friday protest against working conditions at Walmart this weekend, picketing at the retailer’s locations in Scarborough, Auburn, Augusta and Ellsworth.

The Portland Press Herald reported that around 70 protesters participated in the demonstration, joining others at 1,500 Walmart locations around the country for the event organized by the pro-labor group Organization United for Respect at Walmart.

The group said that the retailer does not allow workers to keep full-time schedules and underpays them. As a result, the group said each store drains nearly $1 million a year in government benefits because of some employees’ dependence on public assistance. A spokesman for the company contested the group's statements, telling the paper the company pays an average of $12.81 an hour for its non-management workers and that more than half of its employees have a full-time schedule.
