Mainers' unemployment benefits to lapse

Congress' failure to pass an extension of unemployment benefits before taking a week off will mean a lapse of payment for about 2,700 Mainers.

Those affected will receive notices from the Maine Department of Labor, and about 1,000 more Mainers a week will exhaust their benefits unless Congress passes an extension when it resumes session, according to Capitol News Service. Mainers who received extended benefits approved during the recession will get notices from the state, as well as those exhausting their regular 26 weeks of state unemployment benefits. Congress passed a number of jobless benefit programs during the recession, resulting in four different categories of extended benefits, according to the news service.

The House passed its version of the extension Friday, but the session ended for the Memorial Day holiday before the Senate reached a decision. There are approximately 58,000 unemployed people in Maine.
