Mainers rank as some of the hardest workers in the Northeast, according to a new analysis by financial website WalletHub. But perhaps not as hard as their neighbors to the west.
Maine placed No. 32 in the state-by-state comparison, which was released last week. Using publicly available date, the study evaluated 10 criteria such as the length of the average work week, the share of workers leaving vacation time unused, and the percentage of workers with multiple jobs.
Maine came in just behind Washington, No. 31, and ahead of Mississippi, No. 33. Seven states in the northeastern U.S. fared worse in the ranking. And in a separate comparison of the “indirect” measures of hard work, such as the multiple jobs and the lack of leisure time, Maine ranked No. 7.
However, in the overall ranking, New Hampshire residents toiled their way to the upper tiers, ranking No. 9. Vermonters ranked No. 28.
Alaska ranked No. 1 for hard work, while New Mexico was No. 50. For the complete rankings and more information, click here.
