Maine's two Democratic Congressmen split their votes Friday on the federal government's $700 billion bailout of Wall Street.
While Rep. Tom Allen, Maine's 1st District representative, voted in favor of the bill, Rep. Mike Michaud, the 2nd District representative, voted against it. Allen said the bill would help prevent the country from falling into a deeper and longer recession, while Michaud said the bill was "arbitrary" and would only push the country further into debt, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Both men repeated the vote they made Sept. 29, the first time the U.S. House of Representatives considered the bailout package. After that vote, the Senate added roughly $110 billion in tax breaks and other incentives to the bill to sweeten the deal for politicians who had voted against it.
U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins both supported the bill when the Senate voted on it Wednesday.
