Maine's September unemployment was record low, again

After sinking in August to its lowest level since at least 2016, Maine’s unemployment rate stayed there last month.

The state recorded a seasonally adjusted rate of 2.9% in September, unchanged from August, the Maine Department of Labor said in a news release Friday.

Maine’s unemployment rate has been below 4% for 45 consecutive months, more than double the previous record of sub-4% unemployment, from 1999-2001, according to state economist Glenn Mills.

The Labor Department said there were an estimated 632,100 nonfarm jobs in September, up 3,200 from one year ago. The private sector accounted for 531,800 jobs, an increase of 3,100 over September 2018. The largest job gains were in the retail and manufacturing sectors.

The national unemployment rate in September was 3.5%, a slight decrease from the August rate of 3.7% and from 3.8% one year ago.

September’s unemployment rates in other New England states were: 3.6% in both Connecticut and Rhode Island, 2.9%  in Massachusetts, 2.5%  in New Hampshire and 2.2% in Vermont.

According to data that was not seasonally adjusted, unemployment rates were at all-time lows in each of Maine’s metropolitan areas: 2.3% in Bangor, 2.4% in Lewiston-Auburn and 1.9% in Portland-South Portland.

Among counties, unemployment was lowest in Sagadahoc, at 1.8%, and highest in Aroostook, Somerset and Washington, at 3.3%.
