Maine's workplace death rate rises in 2011

In 2011, Maine had six more workplace deaths than the previous year. The total, 26, was higher than the total recorded deaths for 15 of the previous 20 years for which the state’s Department of Labor records the statistics.

The numbers issued in a report Wednesday show that transportation accidents were the cause of a majority of the workplace-related deaths, comprising 61.5% of the total. Violence and injuries from another person or animal caused four workplace deaths in 2011, the second-highest cause. Exposure to harmful substances or environments caused three workplace deaths in 2011, as did unspecified fatal accidents.

The number of workplace deaths in 2011 gives the state an occupational fatality rate — deaths per 100,000 workers — of 4.2, above the rate of 3.3 in 2010. Maine’s workplace fatality rate in 2011 was also higher than the national rate of 3.5, according to the report.
