MaineToday Media shrinks staff

MaineToday Media, owner of several newspapers including the Portland Press Herald, began another round of anticipated layoffs last Thursday.

Seventeen members of the Portland Newspaper Guild were laid off, according to news channel WMTW 8. Neither the newsroom nor the advertising department was affected, but some layoffs did occur in the South Portland press room and other departments in Portland. Another 23 employees, including staff in news and advertising, accepted buyouts.

MaineToday Media will have over 50 fewer positions by April, and 400 employees will remain at the Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, and MaineToday.com, MaineToday Media CEO Richard Connor said. The company announced last month that more layoffs would be forthcoming.
