Marden's changes Scarborough timeline

Maine retailer Marden's is pushing back its plans to open its largest store in Scarborough until next year.

Marden's Surplus & Salvage has been in negotiations to buy the former Wal-Mart building, but had to delay closing the deal after it learned of town requirements that would add up to $800,000 to the cost of building improvements, Ham Marden, the company's president, told the Portland Press Herald. As a result, the store won't open later this year as originally planned, but likely in the first quarter of 2010, after Marden's completes a traffic study related to the requirements.

In September, Marden's got the OK from the Scarborough planning board to open the store with only $200,000 in site upgrades.
