Masardis mill issues temporary layoffs to 135

The new owner of Fraser Timber’s lumber mill in Masardis is planning to lay off 135 workers for the next four weeks because of a downturn in the market.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Quebec-based Maibec, which bought the mill in January, informed employees about the temporary layoffs last week.

"It is only temporary," Charles Tardif, vice president of Maibec, told the newspaper. "The price of lumber has been going down since January, but the situation is starting to improve really slowly."
