A Boston-based public relations firm has opened an office in Portland to focus on helping health care and human services organizations.
The Congress Street office will be run by Rosemary Baldacci, former Gov. John Baldacci's sister; Rebecca Pollard and Michael Bergan, both Colby College graduates. The firm has about a dozen employees.
Philip Johnston, president and CEO of Johnston Associates, says he wants to expand in Maine because the state "is an interesting, progressive state that has experimented with health care reform," and "has a lot of energy" around its human services sector. The office provides services in public affairs, government relations, grant writing and health care consulting, and plans to reach out to Maine's community health centers, other health care organizations, schools and universities, and nonprofits. "We care a lot about people having access to high-quality, affordable health care, and everyone we work with shares that commitment," Johnston says.
Johnston is a well-known Democrat in Massachusetts. Prior to founding Johnston Associates in 1996, he was a five-term state legislator and a Cabinet member under Gov. Michael Dukakis. He was also appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1992 to serve as the New England administrator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
