MCCS foundation targets businesses

The new Maine Community College System foundation is planning to target businesses that hire graduates rather than alumni to raise money for scholarships and other school programs.

John Fitzsimmons, president of the community college system, told the Kennebec Journal that the Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges will reach out to businesses that employ community college graduates or train their workers through the colleges to donate to the foundation. "I think we can tap a business base in a very effective way," he told the paper. The foundation will target businesses like Kennebec Technologies in Augusta, where half the 50 employees are community college graduates.

The foundation was created last month to raise capital for scholarship, capital investments and new facilities and offset the $1.7 million the seven-school system is slated to lose in state subsidy.
