McKernan named president of U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation

Former Maine Gov. John “Jock” McKernan has been appointed president of the nonprofit U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which is a research and advocacy arm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He will start Oct. 2, the foundation announced Wednesday.

McKernan, the husband of former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, also will serve as senior adviser to Chamber President and CEO Thomas Donohue, according to the Bangor Daily News.

McKernan is a native of Bangor and a Republican who was governor from 1987 to 1995. Snowe was a U.S. Senator from Maine until January.

“Olympia and I are going to spend more time in Washington and I wanted to get involved in issues that I care about,” McKernan said in an interview with Politico.

“I come from a state that has always been fairly centrist. When it comes to jobs and economic growth and competitiveness and education and training, those are issues that people ought to be able to come together on,” he added.

He also told Politico he hopes the business community can be a catalyst for breaking the partisan logjam in Washington.

McKernan’s record has been scrutinized in recent years because a for-profit education company he chaired from 2003 to 2007 was sued over alleged illegal student recruitment practices, according to the BDN. The company denied the allegations, and McKernan has been dropped as a defendant from the court proceedings.
