The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory said its president, Kevin Strange, has received a five-year, $2.1 million federal grant to study protein regulation in an effort to develop better treatments for Alzheimer’s and other diseases.
The Bar Harbor laboratory announced Monday that the grant from the National Institutes of Health will help Strange study two unique elements found in diverse proteins that are poorly understood and, if mutated, could lead to serious heart, muscle, eye, bone, kidney and metabolic diseases. For that reason, the laboratory said, the two elements have been targeted for drug development.
“Kevin is widely recognized as a leader in improving our understanding of the role of these poorly understood protein domains,” Nadia Rosenthal, director of the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute and member of the MDI Biological Laboratory’s Board of Scientific Counselors, said in a prepared statement. “In addition to maintaining an NIH-funded research program in a highly competitive funding environment, he is also the driving force behind the major transformation and growth of the MDI Biological Laboratory over the past six years.”
