MDI bio lab wins $1.3M grant

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is receiving a $1.28 million grant to fund studies on the health effects of chemicals.

The five-year grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences will allow the lab's staff to analyze data it has gathered on interactions between chemicals, genes and diseases, according to a press release from the lab. The studies will seek to better demonstrate which chemicals people are exposed to and how those chemicals could be linked to diseases, and the information will be available to the public through the lab's online Comparative Toxicogenomics Database.

In 2005, MDIBL founded the CTD, which is also funded through the National Center for Research Resources and the Pfizer Corp., according to the release.
